Description
Our Lime, Basil & Mandarin scented soy wax candle is made with 100% soy wax (with no paraffin) for a longer, cleaner burn. The gentle citrus aromas mingle with hints of basil, in this modern classic. We use quality paraben-free fragrance oils. CLP details can be found below. This candle contains a wick made of cotton and paper. This candle comes in a stunning amber glass jar with an aluminium lid.
Note: This jar size is widely sold as being “120ml” (as it would hold 120ml of water). We sell our candles based on their minimum net weight (in this instance 89g), as candles are a solid, not a liquid.
*Based on burning your candle as per our Burning Instructions
Full burning instructions are provided with the candle.
Please use this candle within 6 months of purchase.
Burning Instructions
Your candle is unique
Thank you for choosing to burn a Fflam candle. We really appreciate you helping us grow our small business. All of our soy candles are hand poured in small batches. This means that each candle is unique. Your candle may have a perfectly smooth top, it could have some small lumps and bumps, or it may have a ‘frosted’ appearance. Occasionally natural oils from within the soy wax may pool slightly on the surface of your candle (usually if it has experienced sudden temperature changes while resting). This can simply be wiped away gently with a tissue before burning. After burning, depending on your room temperature, the surface of your candle may look uneven when it hardens. This is perfectly normal for a natural wax like soy.
Over time your soy candle may yellow or darken. This is usually caused by exposure to UV light (or by strong fragrances like vanilla). The amber glass jar and lid help to filter out some UV light, so we are able to avoid adding any artificial UV inhibitors. We recommend storing your candle in a dark, relatively cool place with the lid on (once fully cooled). Please burn within 6 months of purchase.
The above characteristics of soy wax don’t effect the performance of your candle in any way. These characteristics show that we haven’t used any additives, other than our paraben free fragrance oils.
Getting the most out of your candle
The following tips will enable you to enjoy your new candle safely, while making sure your candle burns up all the wax:
Keeping the wick central / Wax build-up
When you receive your candle the wick will be centred. As the soft soy wax melts, the wick may relax and slip off-centre. If you notice this happening, please snuff out the candle immediately and allow to cool (but not fully solidify). Take a teaspoon or similar and very gently move the wick (under the surface of the melted wax as well as above) back into the centre of the glass. Once cooled you can relight your candle and enjoy. Remember to trim away any carbon build-up and check the wick height (as explained below) before relighting. Also never burn in a draft.
Keeping the wick central is important, as it prevents the side of your glass from getting too hot (and potentially shattering). It also means your candle burns more evenly. If the wick remains significantly off-centre for too long, the candle may not melt all the wax as it moves down the glass.
After each burn, when the wax has cooled but not yet fully solidified, please gently recentre and straighten the wick.
While an excess build up of wax can be caused by an off-centre wick, this candle is designed to leave some wax build-up (up to a few mm depending on your room temperature) on the walls of the candle for several initial burns. This will catch-up further down the glass (usually before half way down) if the wick is kept central. Your candle is carefully designed this way so as not to become too hot further down the glass. Never touch the glass or move your candle once it is burning.
Wick trimming
To prolong the life of your candle and to ensure safety, please trim your wick to the following lengths before every burn and remove any carbon build-up from the wick.
While your candle is burning in the top half of the jar please trim the wick to 5mm (0.5cm) before every burn. This is shorter than you may think so please measure! Please also take into account any raised wax around the base of the wick when trimming (please be conservative).
When the candle nears the half-way point of the jar and has also cleaned most of the excess wax off the sides of the glass, please trim the wick shorter, to a maximum of 4mm (0.4cm) in length before every burn. This is important, as more heat is retained within the glass further down. This prevents the sides of the glass getting excessively hot.
Trimming the wick to these lengths reduces the amount of black carbon build-up (and mushrooming) on the wick and ensures a safe flame height. If you accidentally trim the wick too short or the wick snaps when trimming, don’t panic – we’ve all been there! Simply take a teaspoon and carefully scrape away a small amount of wax from immediately around the wick until it is long enough to light, at your required length.
We recommend using a wick trimming tool, sharp nail clippers, or scissors to trim your wick before each burn. Once the candle moves further down the jar we recommend using sharp nail clippers to enable you to reach the wick.
Burn times
On the first few burns it is important to burn your candle for 3 hours (but no longer). This allows enough wax to be melted to enable the candle to eventually burn off all the wax as it moves further down the glass. If you burn the candle for less than 3 hours initially it could leave more wax residue than the candle can melt later. Your candle does not need to achieve a full melt pool (the whole top layer of wax melted) on the first burn, but it should get within a few millimetres of the glass before you extinguish it. This ensures you get the most out of your candle. Remember your jar will become hot. Please do not touch or move until the flame has been extinguished and the wax has fully solidified.
While the candle is in the top half of the jar, please burn your candle for no longer than 3 hours at a time. After the first long burn, we suggest aiming for at least 2.5 hours per burn, up to the 3 hour maximum.
When the candle nears the bottom half of the jar please burn your candle for no longer than 2 hours at a time (but for at least 1.5 hours). When there is only 1.2cm of wax remaining, please extinguish and replace your candle.
Burning the candle for longer than recommended can cause the wick the become too long and the flame can become too large. This can lead to excessive carbon build-up and a hotter jar. Never burn for longer than recommended.
Flame dancing
As the candle burns further down the glass the flame will begin to dance. This is enabled by the tall, narrow shape of the amber glass and is normal for this shape of jar. Please therefore keep the wick trimmed short & central (as explained above) and burn for our recommended time periods, to prevent the glass from overheating. Likewise if you notice the flame is nearing one side of the glass, please move wick as above.
Flame height
If your flame ever reaches 2.75cm from the bottom arc of the flame (not the the bottom of the wick) to it’s tip, please snuff out immediately, allow to cool, and re-trim the wick to the correct length before relighting. If you follow these instructions the flame shouldn’t get near this height. If you ever experience the flame ‘shooting’ (i.e. surging dramatically higher upwards – not to be confused with dancing from side to side) , smoking/sooting, or blackening of the jar, please snuff out and follow the guidance above. If you realise you’ve trimmed the wick to short after initial lighting, please snuff out, allow to cool and remove a small amount of wax from around wick base before relighting (to reach the recommended wick length).
If you follow these burning instructions you’ll have many hours of enjoyment from your new candle.
